Homestyle Tater Tot Casserole: The Ultimate Comfort Food Classic is a hearty, cheesy, and crispy baked dish perfect for family dinners or potlucks. Made with savory ground meat, creamy mushroom soup, and topped with golden Tater Tots, this classic American casserole delivers unbeatable flavor and comfort in every bite.

  • Total Time: 45-50 minutes
  • Yield: 6 servings

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb (450g) ground beef or turkey
  • 1 small onion, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 can (10.5 oz) cream of mushroom soup
  • 1/2 cup sour cream
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1 package (32 oz) frozen Tater Tots
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Optional toppings: sliced green onions, bacon bits

Instructions

  1. Heat a nonstick skillet over medium heat, add olive oil, and cook ground beef or turkey until browned. Stir in diced onion and minced garlic. Season with salt and pepper. Cook until translucent and fully cooked, then drain excess fat.
  2. Combine cream of mushroom soup and sour cream in a bowl. Mix well, then add the cooked meat mixture and half of the shredded cheddar cheese.
  3. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Spread the meat mixture evenly in a greased baking dish. Arrange the frozen Tater Tots in a single layer on top. Sprinkle remaining cheddar cheese over the Tater Tots.
  4. Bake for 30-35 minutes until Tater Tots are golden and crispy. Broil for an additional 2-3 minutes if extra crispiness is desired, watching carefully.

Notes

  • Feel free to add vegetables like peas, bell peppers, or corn for extra nutrition.
  • You can prepare the casserole a day ahead, refrigerate, and bake when ready.
  • Use ground chicken or turkey as a leaner option instead of beef.
  • Leftovers can be stored up to 3 days in an airtight container or frozen for up to 2 months.
