Perfect for breakfast or brunch, these easy homemade rolls are versatile, delicious, and sure to become a morning favorite. Made from scratch with simple ingredients, they offer a delightful way to kick off your day.

  • Total Time: 3 hours
  • Yield: 12 rolls

Ingredients

Scale
  • 3 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 packet active dry yeast (2 ¼ teaspoons)
  • 1 cup warm milk
  • ¼ cup granulated sugar
  • ¼ cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • Optional: sesame seeds or poppy seeds for topping

Instructions

  1. Warm the milk until slightly above room temperature, then dissolve the yeast in it. Let sit for 5 minutes until frothy.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine flour, sugar, and salt.
  3. Add the yeast mixture, melted butter, and egg to the dry ingredients. Mix until a soft dough forms.
  4. Knead the dough for 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  5. Cover the dough with a damp cloth or plastic wrap and let rise in a warm place for 1 to 1.5 hours, until doubled in size.
  6. Punch down the dough and divide into 12 equal pieces. Shape each into rounds or ovals and place in a greased baking dish or on a parchment-lined sheet. Cover and let rise for another 30 minutes.
  7. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Brush rolls with melted butter and sprinkle with seeds if desired.
  8. Bake for 20-25 minutes until golden brown. Remove from oven and brush with additional butter if desired.

Notes

  • Ensure the milk is warm but not hot to activate the yeast properly.
  • For a sweeter version, sprinkle cinnamon sugar before shaping the rolls.
  • For a savory touch, add cheese or herbs inside the dough.
  • Let the baked rolls cool completely before storing to prevent sogginess.
